The Veracruz Coral Reef System is one of the biggest in the country. It is found off of the coast of Veracruz, in front of the cities of Veracruz and Anton Lizardo. This 52,238 hectare system is made up of many islands and 23 reefs which unite to create and impressive reef system. This underwater mountain range houses a wide variety of flora and fauna. Its magnitude was once a force to be reckoned with for many captains, which created shipyard containing 350 wrecked vessels scattered along the reef.
Although its vicinity to two large rivers leaves it subject to water pollution it is still one of the least exploited. When President Salinas de Gortari named it a National Sea Park it helped protect this area from exploitation.
